I know this is a tad late but here goes anyway\u2026 Happy 2019 Everybody! I hope it is going to be a seriously awesome one for us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the year we celebrate the \u2018The International Year of the Periodic Table\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nthe powers that be, i.e. UNESCO, the Periodic Table of Elements is \u201cA Common Language for Science<\/em>\u201d and is\none of the most significant achievements in science, capturing the essence not\nonly of chemistry, but also of physics and biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Period\nSystem was first discovered by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869\u2014which makes 2019 the\n150th<\/sup> anniversary of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026 what\nexactly is this table of elements?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nut\nshell, it\u2019s a grid that organises and names all the elements. Elements are made\nout of atoms, which are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Each\nelement has an atomic number and a name. Some of the elements letters are easy\nto understand, others not so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s like the\nalphabet of everything that we can see, touch or smell. In fact, even those we\ncan\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance,\nO (number 8) is for oxygen. We can\u2019t see it, smell it or taste it\u2014but it\u2019s\nthere, otherwise we would not be here! Oxygen is vital for all life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au (number\n79) is for gold \u2013 but the Au comes from the Latin name for gold \u2013 aurum<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helium (He \u2013\nnumber 2) is the gas that gets used in those fancy floating balloons (which, by\nthe way, are really bad for the environment because often they float away landing\nup in rivers and oceans causing huge amounts of damage to the environment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elements are\nlike the building blocks for all the matter in the world. For example, when\nhydrogen and oxygen (H2<\/sub>O) are combined the result is water. This is\ncalled chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun fact:\nHydrogen is the most common element found in the Universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all do\nchemistry most days without even realising it, for example, if we bake a cake,\ningredients are added together to make something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes! People\nare obviously made up of elements too. It does not matter where you live\neither\u2013on earth or mars\u2014the elements are still the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
