As we walked in, I\nsaid \u201cOh oh there\u2019s load-shedding here!\u201d I could hear the rumble of a\ngenerator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be\nsilly Sibo,\u201dmum responded, then stopped, cocked her head and reluctantly\nagreed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I smirked a\nbit because mum hates to be wrong. There seemed to be no problems, so we\ngrabbed a trolley and carried on into the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half\nway through our shop, the noise of the generator suddenly died and the store went\ndark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-light-gray-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\">Dark is not a\nvery accurate description. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was so\npitch black you could barely see your hand in front of your face. One never\nreally thinks about the fact that there are no windows in big supermarkets\u2014there\u2019s\na lot of artificial lighting in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were a\nnumber of yelps and squeaks. I\u2019m not a fan of the dark either so I sidled\ncloser to mum and hung onto the trolley. Mum, on the other hand, clutched her\nbag tighter so that nobody could sneak up on her in the dark either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few\nseconds, people hauled out their cell phones and the pitch black was pierced\nwith random holes of light, which made it less scary. That torch app is pretty\nuseful in a situation like that and if you don\u2019t have one installed on your\nphone, maybe it\u2019s a good idea to get one. The genny hummed, the lights flickered back on, off and then\non again. Everybody resumed their shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s hurry\nup and get out of here Sibo,\u201d mum picked up the pace of her shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was quite\nimpressed with the way that everybody just stopped, stayed where they were and\ndid not panic or do anything stupid. Although I wondered if the shop\nexperienced losses with some dodgy people taking the opportunity to pop items\ninto their handbags or pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was also\ncurious about what happened at the tills. Did the whole system crash? Did they\nhave to start ringing up everything again? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a nosey\nperson, I asked, and the lady at the till said that their system just carried\non like normal.
